Smart Bassinets and Connected Infant Sleep Technology: A Narrative Review of Efficacy Evidence, Parental Well-Being Outcomes, Market Dynamics, and Regulatory Gaps

Abstract

A baby's birth has many positive, challenging and often tiring consequences for a family. One of the biggest problems new parents encounter is sleep problems, which not only can impact the health of the baby, but the physical and emotional health of the caregivers. More recently, a new type of nursery technology has been developed which integrates automated soothing, continuous monitoring and data analysis of sleep into a single nursery furniture product, which are many times designed to transform to a crib when the child grows. This article will explore the techniques and technologies of these smart sleep systems, how they work and whether or not they are useful for young couples, working parents, large families and even babies. It also examines the business models and economic factors behind the industry such as direct to consumer selling, rental schemes, financing schemes and health savings account eligibility. The article also provides a diplomatic critique of the industry practices, such as affordability through pricing, pushy marketing and sales tactics, reliance on celebrities and the unanswered questions of data privacy. The gaps in the research are identified and the discussion ends with a balanced, forward looking evaluation to assist parents, policy makers and manufacturers to make informed decisions on the future of infant care technology.
